MEXICAN TOURISM UNCOVERED

Tourism is a transversal economic sector that influences and is influenced by a number of other economic activities, analyzing tourism implies taking into account several factors. For the first ‘UNCOVERED’ report in the Americas, TOPOSOPHY´ experts analyze the complex situation that the largest tourism destination in Latin-America is experiencing, and give their views on the top priorities for government and business in Mexico today.

Mexico went through large reforms during 2014 including fiscal, telecom, energy, education and security all at once. Societies normally react to reforms, even when governments implement only one. This important moment in time when Mexico is rethinking its strategy at all levels (or almost all) is a good moment to enter a constantly growing market in a country that specifically identifies tourism as a major development factor for the coming years.

Mexican transport infrastructures will receive an important boost in the following 10-20 years including the new Mexico City airport that attempts to be the main hub in Latin-America; high speed trains to communicate inner cities on the first high-speed train project of the American continent before Canada, the US or Brazil; plus thousands of highway kilometers and new port facilities. These important investments are expected to generate optimal conditions for tourism development in the country, in order to gain back its positon in the top 10 tourism countries worldwide, on a medium term horizon.

Investors, both local and foreign, should pay attention to the business opportunities that the new market conditions in the country will attract, combined to the recovery of the USA economy, Mexico´s largest international tourism source market.

This promising situation is only obstructed by the actual social unrest generated by security issues combined with the above mentioned reforms. The national authorities should pay great attention in dealing with social demands and generating more quality employment, education, and better social conditions, area where tourism, given its characteristics, might play a key role.

Discover TOPOSOPHY’s take on the current state of Mexico Tourism in this candid report that should provide much food for thought, for tourism industry professionals in Mexico and beyond.
