WE'RE GUIDING EUROPEAN CITIES WITH THE 'TOOLBOX FOR MANAGING TOURISM GROWTH'

As a starting point, the guide recognises that what is frequently referred to as ‘overtourism’ or ‘overcrowding’ is, in fact a much more complex issue than is often portrayed in the media. Urbanisation, globalisation, migration, digitalisation, the environment and even people's’ perception of place and identity are all pressing issues and are all interlinked with tourism growth.
Challenges such as these naturally require city authorities to take a sensitive approach across a range of areas. The Toolbox outlines the possible steps that Destination Development, Marketing and Management Organisations (DDMMOs) can take, adapting each to their local needs. This includes guidance on Forming Partnerships, Marketing Done Differently, On-the-Ground Visitor Management, Managing the Collaborative Economy and Public Education.
TOPOSOPHY was one of the first organisations of its kind to publish guidance on managing tourism growth in the modern era with the report Stepping Out of the Crowd, produced in March 2016 for the Pacific Asia Travel Association. As a proud Knowledge Partner of European Cities Marketing, we were also behind last year’s pioneering Manifest on the Future of DMOs, which set out a vision of how Destination Marketing Organisations could adapt to take on a more powerful role in the years to come.
